A Guardian Angel
He woke up suddenly. Bathed in sweat and gasping for air, as if he had been running for hours. He could feel his heart pouching in his chest. A tear or a drop of sweat ran down his cheek and hit his blanket, which he had kicked of himself in his sleep.
Luke sat up, trying to breathe calmly and steady his beating heart.
It was in the middle of the night, but still something had woken him up. He could feel it, as clearly as he could sense the person sleeping beside him.
He looked over his shoulder and smiled. Mara lay in the bed, not very far from him, sleeping peacefully. In her sleep the marks of her disease was almost invisible to those, who didn’t know of it. But Luke still remembered his fear of loosing Mara back then, his fear of loosing their unborn child. He reached out and stroke Mara across her cheek with her fingertips. Without a sound his lips formed the words ‘I love you’ and kissed his wife. Then he stood up and slipped into a robe.
No, it was not the thought of Mara. It was something else.
Luke froze, all at sudden. Ben!!
He could easily feel his son’s presence in the next room. Ben was still half asleep and seemed to be happy and safe. He had been quiet this evening, allowing Luke and Mara to spend some time alone together and for a moment forget everything around them. Even the war.
But he also sensed something else in the baby’s room…
Luke reached out and grabbed his light sabre. He didn’t sense any danger. They were supposed to be safe here. But in these times you couldn’t be too careful.
He took a long step to the door and opened it.
The baby’s room was as the dark as deep space. But Luke had no trouble at all seeing the crouched figure beside his son’s bed. He hit the switch to the light and turned on his light sabre with a sharp hiss.
The figure looked up, as the light went on. It was dressed in a long, brown robe, much like Luke’s own. Only darker.
In a brief moment Luke starred into two, black eyes, who were slightly green because of the shine from his light sabre…
He lowered his weapon. “Bloody??”
“Good evening, Master Skywalker…” The Aliran nodded slightly and draw back his hood. He didn’t stand or make any other move than his nod.
His face had an expression of calm and seriousness, which was mirrored in his eyes. Luke remembered how this particular student had been before all this happened. Impatient and filled with anger. But that was a long time ago. Bloody was at peace with himself, at last.
“What are you doing?? You can’t be in here!” Luke turned of his light sabre and put it away.
“I’m sorry, Master.” Bloody didn’t look at him. His eyes were fixed on Ben, who was still asleep. “I was worried about your son and had to see, if he was all right.”
“You were worried about Ben??” Luke could hardly believe his own ears. He knew that Bloody was very fond of children, but he didn’t think that the Aliran would sneak into people’s rooms in the middle of the night to check, if a child were okay.
“I bet Wedge has told you about, how I used to sleep on the floor outside Syal and Myri’s room…” Bloody smiled wryly by the memories. “To protect them.”
“Yes, I think he mentioned this to me once… But you should get some sleep, Bloody. You haven’t slept for days.” Luke kneeled beside him and rested a hand on the Aliran’s shoulder. “Even a Jedi needs to sleep sometime.”
“If you say so, Master Skywalker…” Bloody nodded. “Then I’ll get some sleep. Right here.”
He nodded at the spot beside Ben’s bed, where he was sitting.
Luke sighed. “Bloody…”
“Please, Master Skywalker…” Bloody lifted a hand. “I need this. Don’t ask me why – Let’s just say… It’s a Jedi thing.”
Luke looked at Bloody with a smile looming in the corner of his mouth. “A Jedi thing.”
“Yes.” Bloody smiled with all his white teeth showing. “And as a true Jedi I will heed whatever call the Force sends to me.”
“All right…” Luke smiled brightly. “Just don’t wake him up.”
“I won’t, Master Skywalker.”
Luke turned around and walked to the door. Here he stopped and looked straight ahead, but didn’t turn towards Bloody. “You know… I’m always worried about Ben… About him being as strong as he is… About the future… But most of all I’m afraid that something might happen to him - while I'm not there to protect him…”
He opened the door to leave the room.
“Master Skywalker…”
Bloody hesitated a moment, then he continued:
“Luke…”
Luke turned to the Aliran Jedi, who was starring directly at him with intense, black eyes.
“That won’t happen. Not while I’m around.”
