Titel: The Death of the Master
Personer: Luke, Mara, Kam, Tionne, Corran and others.
Fan Fiction.
Kam sat in the window pane in one of the giant windows of the Jedi Temple on Yavin. Outside the sun was setting, and the sky was never more beautiful, than at this time. And yet he felt so sad and lost. He knew the time was getting closer by the hour. That there was not much time left, and it made his heart heavy with grief.
“Corran?”
He turned his head and a faint smile came to his wrinkled face. He had lived to see many wars, many friends dead, and yet, here she was. Alive and still looking beautiful.
“Yes Tionne?” Her silvery hair had not changed a bit over the years.
“He is asking for you – for us. I think it is time”
Kam nodded and got down from the window. He did not want it to be time, but he knew there was nothing he could do about it.
Together they walked down the hall to the Skywalker chambers. Ben opened the door, and embraced them both with a smile.
“It’s good you’re here. Dad wants to see you”
Tionne nodded and smiled. A sad smile, but nevertheless a smile.
“We know Ben – Corran told me a few minutes ago, and I went to get Kam. Where is Corran now?”
“Talking to dead in the bedroom, remembering old days and stuff like that. At least that’s what I think they’re doing. Heard them laughing a few moments ago”
Kam smiled and shook his head.
“Sounds like Luke and Corran all right – who else is here?”
Ben ran a hand through his hair and wrinkled his nose in a pondering way. Suddenly he looked very much like his father.
“Well, mum’s here, naturally. In fact, she’s in there with them. She’s not taking all this too well. She’ll miss him terribly. I mean, we all know it’s time, but...” He went silent, and they allowed him the time he needed. It was his father’s last hour, after all.
“Well, anyway, Han and Leia are just on they’re way too, they went to the dining hall to get some dinner, but they’re coming back now, Jaina went to get them. That means she’s here too” They started the way to the living room, and soon Tionne and Kam got the answer. Jacen and Tenel Ka was sitting in there, along with Lowbacca, Tahiri, Mirax, Lando and Tendra, old and tired looking Wedge, Iella, Gavin and a handful of other, old and loved friends. People who had always been friends of the skywalker couple, people who they had fought with during the Vong invasion. Kam sighed. Those days seemed ages ago, and yet...Here they were, the day Luke was going to die. Tenel Ka rose from her seat.
“Master Kam, Master Tionne, please. Sit down”
Jacen took the hint and rose too, leaving the sits for the old Jedi couple. He smiled a pained smile
“So...it is time, hah?”
Tionne nodded, and looked down at her hands. They had all felt Luke grow weaker the last months, and Luke himself had known for a long time that the end was nearing. They were all so well prepared, so why did it hurt so much?
Suddenly the door flew open, and in came Han, Leia and Jaina.
“How is he?” Leia looked at them worriedly.
“He just asked for us” Kam nodded towards Tionne and pointed to himself.
Corran came out of the bedroom and walked to Mirax’ side, where he sat down heavily. He closed his eyes a few moments, before he looked at Kam and Tionne.
“He would like to talk to you know...before he calls us all inside the room....” He closed his eyes again, and Mirax put a hand on his shoulder. Lowbacca growled quietly.
“Luke” Kam smiled at him as he entered the room. The whitehaired master was half lying, half sitting in the bed, smiling at Kam. Kam could feel how weak he was, and yet, he was perfectly at peace, as he lay there. Mara was sitting on the bed, gently holding Lukes hand. She looked older and more tired than he remembered her, and it pained his heart how the last months had aged her.
“Kam, Tionne. I’m so happy to see you two.” He struggled a bit, and finally managed to sit up. Mara arranged the pillows behind him, so he could lean back and rest.
“Come” He gestured them closer, and as there were no chairs closer to the bed, they ended upsitting on the edge of the skywalker bed. Luke reached out and grabbed Tionnes hand.
”Tionne, my dear, dear friend. I have never told you, how much it meant to me, to have you here by my side, helping me run this place. I’m not sure how long I would have managed without you. Without your patience, I might have killed off a student or too” he chuckled, and Tionne smiled her kind smile. “No, honestly. You were my student, but also my friend” He squeezed her hand “thank you – for everything”
Tionne looked down at the locked together hands, and smile, trying to hide the tear in her eye.
“It was a pleasure Luke – always a pleasure, everyday, every hour” He nodded with a smile – he understood her, and that made her happy.
“And you Kam” Luke smiled at him “Well, there’s not much to say, but thank you. Sometimes the tone got a little....girlish giggle like here, when Mara and Tionne started chit-chatting. And Cilghal too for that sake. Without you – I might have kill off a master” he winked, and they all laughed.
”And” Lukes tone grew serious “Both of you. I never thanked you properly for taking such good care of Ben in the maw cluster. Sometimes I almost think he sees you as his parents, and not Mara and I. You did a good job” He squeezed both their hands.
“And now...I’d like a few moments alone with Mara, before you all come in” He leaned back in the pillows and sighed. Kam and Tionne quickly left the room.
Luke took Mara’s hands in his own, and looked her in the eyes.
“My love...my light and my life.” He smiled at her, and she blinked away her tears. “Mara..I love you with all my heart, and I have always loved you. I think...deep down I loved you from the moment I first lay my eyes on you. You have meant everything to me, and my life would have been nothing without you. I didn’t know how to live before you were mine to love. I have never been more happy, than I was in your company. Our wedding day, Ben’s birth....now...To have you her by my side this day, was all I ever hoped for. I have never been afraid, than when I thought I was going to lose you. I love you”
Mara leaned down and kissed him tenderly.
“Skywalker, I love you...I’m not sure...I don’t think I can go on without you. I don’t want to! And yet, I’m glad I didn’t die first. To inflict that amount of pain on you...” She leaned down and cried with her head on his chest, and he stroke her hair. Weaker than he used to, she noted.
“Mara dear, Mara....don’t cry dear, don’t cry. I’m always with you, don’t you know? I’ll never leave you. This body is just my shell. The real me is inside, and that will never leave you dear, never”
Mara’s voice was just a mere whisper
“I don’t want this moment to end. I love you so much...so much Skywalker...”
Luke gave her a few more moments to cry, before he padded her back.
“Dear, can you go get the others? It is time” He smiled faintly, before he repeated the words of his master. Words he had heard in a time that was lost “Soon I will sleep”
Mara snuffled and went to the door. She opened it, while wiping away her tears.
“Mas..Luke would like you to come in now”
She returned to her seat on the bed, and held on to his hand tightly. His eyes were closed when his friends and family entered. Ben sad down on the other side of the bed, along with Leia and Han. Slowly, Luke opened his eyes, and looked around in the room with a smile that was a mere shadow of its former self. He swallowed a couple of times, before he was able to speak.
“I’m so glad you could all make it. This was how I wished it to end. Surrounded by friends and family. It makes me happy to know that I haven’t fought in vain. That the galaxy is how we all wished it to be, when we first met “He looked at Leia, Han and Wedge and smiled “And to know that the Jedi will continue to serve the galaxy....I couldn’t have wished more of my life. We’ve been through so much together...all of us. We’ve seen....we’ve seen our share of...of wars...more than our share. Our hearts have bl...bleed for those we lost along the way. It is my turn now, but it is...in a time of peace. As I wanted it.”
With that, Luke closed his eyes, and drew his last breath. Tears ran down Maras cheeks, as she saw her dead husband in the bed. Then she gasped, for something that she had not anticipated happened. Luke body disappeared, leaving behind his clothes. Mara blinked several times, looking around it the others. They looked just as shocked as she was.
“Mara...did you know...?” Corran looked at her.
“I had no idea...none at all...if you’ll excuse me...I need...”
She quickly got up and left the room. Mirax was about to follow her, when Leia shook her head.
“Leave her – she needs time to mourn”
Mara sat at the top of the temple, her face burried in her hands. Tears came down her cheeks, and she simply could not stop crying. It felt like a part of her heart had just disappeared.
“Mara” she abruptly sat up and looked around. Who dared to interrupt her now?
“Mara” the voice came behind her, and she turned around, then, she nearly passed out. A ghostly Luke was standing in front of her.
“Luke!”
“As I said my dear – I will always be at your side” With that he disappeared, but Mara’s heart felt so much lighter now. She knew now that, she could and would live without Luke. It would never be the same, but she could do it. She wanted to do it.
